Symptoms of Strabismus

In both childhood and adulthood strabismus, the most obvious symptom is a misalignment or turning of the eye. In some patients the misalignment can be more subtle, but strabismus can cause symptoms such as:

  • Double vision that improves when one eye is covered
  • Eyestrain
  • Image shifting
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Difficulty holding a position on a page when reading

Some children can learn to ignore the eye with strabismus, avoiding double vision, but that can lead to , more commonly known as lazy eye. Amblyopia should be treated as early as possible to help the two eyes learn to work together.
