What to Expect at the Emergency Department
You can go alone, with someone you trust or with the police.
When you check in, tell the nurse you need care after a sexual assault. You may wait in a private area if a care space is not available right away.
You can ask the staff to contact a rape crisis center advocate for in-person or over-the-phone support. The advocate can:
- Provide crisis support that will be kept private
- Help meet your immediate needs, such as transportation
- Connect you with resources for legal advocacy and trauma therapy services
What Happens in a Medical Forensic Exam?
First, an emergency physician or advanced practice provider will address any immediate medical needs.
At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a SANE nurse will care for you and explain your options for medical forensic services. These services may include:
- Taking your medical history
- Performing a physical exam
- Collecting evidence
- Taking photos to document the assault
- Evaluate your risk of STIs and pregnancy
- Talking with you about recommendations for medications and treatment
- Providing follow-up resources
Other team members may be involved in your care, such as a social worker and pharmacist. The social worker can provide emotional support and resources to help you create a safe plan to go home. The pharmacist can answer questions you have about medications.
