What to Expect at the Emergency Department

What to Expect at the Emergency Department

You can go alone, with someone you trust or with the police.

When you check in, tell the nurse you need care after a sexual assault. You may wait in a private area if a care space is not available right away.

You can ask the staff to contact a rape crisis center advocate for in-person or over-the-phone support. The advocate can:

  • Provide crisis support that will be kept private
  • Help meet your immediate needs, such as transportation
  • Connect you with resources for legal advocacy and trauma therapy services

What Happens in a Medical Forensic Exam?

First, an emergency physician or advanced practice provider will address any immediate medical needs.

At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a SANE nurse will care for you and explain your options for medical forensic services. These services may include:

  • Taking your medical history
  • Performing a physical exam
  • Collecting evidence
  • Taking photos to document the assault
  • Evaluate your risk of STIs and pregnancy
  • Talking with you about recommendations for medications and treatment
  • Providing follow-up resources

Other team members may be involved in your care, such as a social worker and pharmacist. The social worker can provide emotional support and resources to help you create a safe plan to go home. The pharmacist can answer questions you have about medications.
