Benign Biopsy Results
If your biopsy results show that your breast abnormality is benign, this means it is not cancer.
Here are common benign (not cancerous) breast abnormalities:
- Fibrocystic changes: Changes in your breast tissue that can happen during menstruation. Often, they look like lumps filled with fluid. They can also cause swelling, pain, lumpiness and sometimes fluid coming from your nipple.
- Fibroadenomas: Hard lumps that may feel like marbles in your breast. They are most common in people in their 20s and 30s and are made of breast tissue. They often get smaller as you age.
- Intraductal papilloma tumors: Wart-like lumps that form in the milk duct of your breast. They can cause abnormal nipple discharge.
You and your physician will create a plan to treat your benign breast condition. Usually, nothing more is needed after a benign biopsy. Sometimes, we may keep an eye on a benign mass or remove it with surgery.
Even after you get a benign diagnosis, it’s important to tell your physician if you notice any changes in your breasts.
