Infections of the Breast
Infections of the Breast
Just like any other part of your body, your breasts can become infected with bacteria. When this happens, your body’s immune system will start to work. This may cause swelling and pain.
Breast infections are more likely for someone who is breastfeeding. Mastitis is the most common type of breast infection in people who are breastfeeding. About 1% to 3% of people who breastfeed will develop mastitis. Treatment can include antibiotics.
If you have a breast infection, you may experience:
- Breast tenderness or pain
- Breast inflammation or enlargement
- Fever, tiredness and chills
- Body aches (different from breast pain)
